Part 3 - The First Century Jewish Mindset

Long Ago, Centuries Earlier...

... between Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal, the tribes of Israel assemble. They are at Shechem, a location within the steep sided narrow valley between mountains. The tribes are instructed then to take their places. Half the tribes stand on one the lower slopes of Gerizim - the mount of blessing. The others stand on Ebal - the mount of cursing. The ark of the covenant and the Levites remain in the centre. It is from there that the covenant will be read aloud, the words echoing across the valley.

It begins. Declarations of blessings that God will bestow on the obedient. Responses from the tribes. Amen!

It continues. Declarations of cursings that God will inflict on the disobedient. Responses again. Amen!

The law is read aloud communally. The 'Amen's echo back and forth. This is deliberately performative, intended to imprint on the national memory. Blessings and warnings braided together. It is not hard to imagine the sound moving like weather across the valley, phrases caught and thrown back by rock and air, the people themselves completing the speech with their response. This is covenant dramatised, experienced, in the hope that it might be lived.

The experience leaves its imprint. The geography becomes a reminder. The location becomes a symbol in perpetuity of the responsibility to choose aright. Joshua returned here to remind the people. Jesus sat here with the woman at the well, offering her a choice. To obey is to move towards thriving; to turn away is to drift toward desolation.

Life or Death!

Coming forward in time a few centuries...

For the crowd on a different mountainside now, listening to Jesus, that historic Gerazim-Ebal moment is part of their identity. Their understanding of who they are, and who God is. The other great formative events that shape their understanding are The Exodus and the Babylonian Exile. The Exodus reminds them that God delivers; the Exile warns them that unfaithfulness has consequences; and the ceremony at Gerizim and Ebal frames life as a daily choice between those trajectories. For Jesus' listeners, these historic events create context, and understanding, and expectation. They are a mental landscape passed by word of mouth from generation to generation.

So let us examine some of the actual words of blessing and cursing that echoed across the valley on that day. It is recorded in the whole of Deuteronomy 28. We are interested in the entire chapter, but it is very long, so I have summarised some sentences. I have not added or subtracted anything substantive, but you may still want to read the entire text in the click link above.

Deuteronomy 28

1 If you fully obey the Lord your God - all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.
2 All these blessings will come on you ... :

3 You will be blessed in the city and ... in the country.
4 (Your children) will be blessed, and your crops, your calves and your lambs.
5 Your basket and kneading trough will be blessed.
6 You will be blessed when you come in and ... out.
7 Your enemies will be defeated ...

8 The Lord will bless ... everything you work on ... the land he is giving you.
9 The Lord will establish you as his holy people
10 ... All ... people on earth will see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and will fear you.

11 The Lord will grant you abundant prosperity ...
12 The Lord will open the heavens, ..., to send rain on your land ... and to bless all (your) work ....
You will lend ... but ... (not) borrow ...
13 The Lord will make you the head, not the tail. ...... at the top, never at the bottom.

14 Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left, following other gods ...

That's It For The Blessings.

Now for the cursings!

15 However, if you do not obey the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come on you and overtake you:

16 You will be cursed in the city, in the country.
17 Your basket and your kneading trough ...
18 (Your children)... , your crops, your calves, your lambs - they will ALL be cursed.

19 You will be cursed when you come in and ... go out.
20 The Lord will send on you curses, confusion and rebuke whatever you try, until you are destroyed ...

21,22 The Lord will plague you with ... (wasting disease, fever and inflammation, scorching heat and drought, blight and mildew) until he has destroyed you...

23 The sky above ... will be bronze, the ground beneath you, iron.
24 The Lord will turn the rain of your country into dust and powder; it will come down from the skies until you are destroyed.

25 The Lord will cause you to be defeated before your enemies.
You will (be regarded as) a thing of horror, an object of ridicule right across the world. ...
26 Your dead bodies will feed the ... animals ...

27,28,29 The Lord will afflict you with incurable boils, tumors, festering sores and itching... ,madness, blindness and confusion ...
You will be unsuccessful in everything you do; day after day - oppressed and robbed, with no ... rescue...

30 pledged to be married to a woman? ... another will take her and rape her!
built a house? You won't live in it!
planted a vineyard? You won't even begin to enjoy the fruit.

More cursings!

31 Your ox will be slaughtered ... you won't even be able to eat it!
Your donkey will be stolen. Your sheep ... given to your enemies, ... No one will rescue them.

32 Your sons and daughters will be deported to another nation, and you will wear out your eyes watching for them day after day, powerless to lift a hand.

33 ... Foreigners ... will eat what your land and work produce, ... You will have nothing but cruel oppression all your days. ...

36 The Lord will drive you into an alien country... you'll end up worshipping gods of wood and stone. ...

38 You'll sow seed but harvest little, ... locusts will devour it!
39 You will cultivate vineyards but have no wine or even grapes ... worms will eat them!
40 You will have olive trees everywhere but no oil ... the olives will all drop off!
41 You will have sons and daughters but you will not keep them ... they will go into captivity.
42 Swarms of locusts will take over all your trees and the crops of your land.

43 The foreigners who live among you, will rise ... above you, as you ... sink to the bottom.
44 ... They will be the head, but you will be the tail.

More cursings!

45 All these curses will come on you ... pursue you and overtake you until you are destroyed ...

47,48 Because you did not serve the Lord your God... therefore in hunger, thirst, nakedness and dire poverty, you will serve your enemies. ... with God's iron yoke on your neck until he has destroyed you.
49 The Lord will bring a distant nation against you..., like an eagle... without respect for the old or pity for the young.
51 They will devour ... your livestock and (your) crops ... until you are destroyed.
They will leave you no grain, wine or oil, nor calves or lambs until you are ruined.

52 They will besiege all your cities...
53, 54 Here's how you will suffer during the siege,
You will eat the flesh of your own children....
The most gentle ... man among you will refuse to share any of the flesh of his children that he is eating.

And then it gets worse, so let's skip that part!

58-62 If you do not carefully follow all the words of this law,
If you don't revere the Lord your God's glorious and awesome name ... He will send fearful plagues ... harsh ... prolonged disasters, severe ... lingering illnesses ... all the diseases of Egypt that you dreaded, ... every kind of sickness and disaster ... until you are destroyed.

63 Just as it pleased the Lord to make you prosper and increase in number, so it will please him to ruin and destroy you...

There's still more, but we've probably had enough!

So Finally We Get To ...

Deuteronomy 30:19-20
19 This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him.

So if you are a first century Jew, you are in absolutely no doubt that the deal between you and God is transactional. You must fulfil certain conditions and then, and then only, will God bless you. If you fail to regard the law, then God will curse you.

You were first taught it at your mother's knee. Then your father took you to synagogue where you got the same message. Your grandparents often made reference to the way things worked. Your schoolmaster drummed it into you. God is transactional. Beware of doing the wrong thing!

And then as you get older, you realise something about those whose lives are a mess, whether they are diseased, or hungry, or homeless or mentally unstable. Those people have obviously sinned against God! The proof is right before your eyes. The time when the farmer lost his crop to locusts - well he obviously failed God somehow. The woman who had a stillborn child must have been a sinful woman. I wonder what she did to deserve that. It must have been pretty bad.

And the wealthy, the privileged, the elite with their fine clothes and big houses, they were obviously in favour with God because they were fine upstanding people. It stood to reason. The law said it.

So now you have the mindset of a first century Jew.

Enjoy!
